Rotary Awards Grants to Essex Museum

Tappahannock Art Guild Presentation

Tappahannock Rotary Club presented the Tappahannock Art Guild a check for $100 last Saturday at the TAG reception at the Honenbergers. Rotary Supports Riverside Hospital

Tappahannock Rotary committed to support the Tappahannock Riverside Hospital with an annual gift of $1,000 a year over the next 5 years or the "Build a Better Place to Heal, Closer to Home" fund. The first donation was presented by C. Norman Wood, Club President and Joe Johnston (far left), Community Service Chair to Liz Martin, Vice President /Administrator for the Tappahannock Riverside Hospital, and Scott Brown (far right), Riverside Director of Advancement at the Rotary Club meeting on Thursday. September 26th.

Wright Andrews inducted

Wright Andrews became the latest member to join the Tappahannock Rotary Club tonight. He was inducted by Dr. John Gregory and presented by sponsor Bob Jump. Club president Norman Wood presided over the ceremony. Wright, a mostly retired Washington lawyer, born in McCormick county South Carolina,  attended Emery Law School, then went to Washington DC to work for Senator Sam Nunn for several years, then worked for a private law office and became partner. Subsequently became involved in legislative work lobbying for financial organizations and was lead lawyer for the sub prime mortgage industry. He has lived in Tappahannock for 27 years and intends to spend 90% of his retired life here in the county!

Tappahannock Club Receives Major Awards 2012-2013

The Tappahannock Rotary Club was more than pleasantly surprised at a recent Rotary District Banquet to be awarded two very special recognition awards for their community work during the 2012-2013 year. The awards banquet held at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg in June was attended by John Lewis (left), Club President 2012-2013, and his wife Hollie. John Lewis still recovering from the surprise said "I am still shocked we won best "Large Club" out of 55 clubs for Community Service and the Presidential Award (only two clubs got that). I was really proud to represent us." The District covers a region including Northern Virginia, west to Charlottesville, and south to West Point.

St. Margaret's School Lindy Williams Guest Speaker

Lindy Williams, the new head of school for St. Margaret's was the program speaker for the evening, one of her first presentations to the local Tappahannock community. She was introduced by David Broad (left), spouse of the outgoing head Margaret Broad, Norman Wood - Club President, and (right) John Gregory, father of Blair Gregory Blanks '86 alumnae of SMS.

Jim Ashworth - Tappahannock Chief of Police

James Ashworth took over Tappahannock Police Dept  on July 1, 2012, after serving 27 years with State Police. Jim improved job definition and evaluation, personnel appraisal, tweaked uniforms, added shift reporting, improved cooperation with Sheriff's dept, instituted a detective investigations officer, started media reporting, added FaceBook and Twitter with great success within a few weeks of the service being launched.  James Ashworth is pictured with program sponsor Sonny Terry and club President Norman Wood.

Rotary Club Crab Race Turns Republican

One of the unexpected events at RivahFest was a flow of political candidates appearing at various locations throughout the festival including a stop at the Rotary Crab Race....  Rob Wittman in track #4, first district congressman won his Rotary Crab Race against Virginia Attorney General and candidate for Republican Governor Ken Cuccinelli in track #3, beating Keith Hodges in track #2 to the finish line, Virginia's 98^th District representative. Also attending was Bishop E W Jackson, the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Race control was by Shep Lewis (left) and Wayne Wessel (right) who maintained an impartial non-partisan arena.

John Lewis Chauffeur Extraordinary!!

John took his ultra sized golf cart to RivahFest and became the Rotary Shuttle service throughout the festival helping older folks, infirm, vip's, exhausted and handicapped visitors move around the 3 x 5 controlled access zone. Great publicity and many positive comments from the public made this a high profile exposure for the club.... well done John - one of your last great deeds as departing President
