Big Croaker Tournament
On Saturday, May 18, 90 boats competed in the Tappahannock Rotary Club's annual Andrew Reavis Memorial Big Croaker Fishing Tournament. David Vance of Fort Loudon, PA, won $2,000 in cash prizes for his croaker of .65 pounds (approximately 10.4 ounces). James Fields of Milford, VA, won $1,000 for the second place croaker and Rod Ashley of Lovingston, VA, won $500 for third place. Youth Division winners were Ryan Pack ($300 first place), Cole Heineman, ($200 second place) and Dan Kurdziel ($100 third place). Although May is usually a good month for croaker fishing on the Rappahannock, croakers were scarce this year. Fishermen enjoyed a nice day on the river with the good weather and reported catching a few small croakers, catfish, perch, several spot, mud toads, rockfish, and a sea mullet.
